We had an amazing dinner here tonight β everything from start to finish was perfect. The sushi rolls were incredibly fresh and flavorful, and the presentation was beautiful. We tried several different rolls, and each one was better than the last β highly recommend the Red Dragon Roll! It was absolutely delicious. The drinks were fantastic too and paired perfectly with our meal. What really stood out was the service β it was so fast and efficient without ever feeling rushed. Every staff member was warm, welcoming, and attentive. To top it all off, they surprised us with a complimentary dessert, which was such a thoughtful touch and the perfect sweet ending to our meal. The prices were very reasonable for the quality and experience β truly an amazing value. Sushi Taro has definitely become one of our new favorite spots, and we canβt wait to come back!
Overview
Sushi Taro Japanese Restaurant is a hidden gem tucked away at 1171 Basketweave Dr, Mt Pleasant, SC 29466, United States, where authentic Japanese cuisine meets warm, welcoming vibes. From the moment you step inside, the subtle aroma of fresh seafood mingled with perfectly seasoned rice sets the stage for a dining experience that feels both refined and homey. On my first visit, I was immediately drawn to the elegant yet cozy decor, featuring traditional wood accents and soft lighting that made the space inviting without feeling formal.
The menu at Sushi Taro is a celebration of classic Japanese flavors, yet itβs curated in a way thatβs approachable for both sushi enthusiasts and first-timers. Iβve spent countless evenings here trying a variety of rolls and nigiri, and each dish is a masterclass in freshness and balance. One standout from my visits is the dragon roll, which combines tender eel, avocado, and cucumber, topped with a smoky sauce that enhances without overwhelming the delicate flavors. Another favorite is the seasonal sashimi platter; the fish quality is consistently top-notch, sourced daily from trusted suppliers to ensure every bite melts in your mouth. According to the National Restaurant Association, restaurants emphasizing ingredient quality see higher customer satisfaction, which is evident here.
Watching the chefs at work behind the sushi bar is part of the charm. The meticulous way they slice fish and assemble each roll demonstrates years of experience and dedication to the craft. Iβve had the chance to ask a chef about the process, and he explained how each fish is treated to preserve its natural flavor while ensuring perfect presentation. Itβs this attention to detail that keeps patrons coming back, as it transforms dining into an interactive culinary lesson.
Beyond sushi, Sushi Taro offers a variety of hot dishes like tempura and teriyaki, which cater to those who prefer something warm and comforting. On a chilly evening, I tried the shrimp tempura, which arrived golden and crisp without being greasy, paired with a light dipping sauce that highlighted the shrimp rather than masking it. Dining here often feels like a small adventure; every visit presents a new combination of textures, tastes, and aromas to explore.
The restaurant also benefits from a prime location in Mt Pleasant. Nestled on Basketweave Drive, itβs easy to reach from nearby neighborhoods, and the ample parking makes it convenient for a casual night out or a celebratory dinner. Local reviews often mention the friendly staff and attentive service, which adds to the sense of trust and reliability-something crucial in choosing a go-to dining spot. Iβve observed that the team is always happy to make recommendations based on dietary preferences or highlight seasonal specials, which makes the experience feel personalized rather than scripted.
If youβre considering dining at Sushi Taro, itβs worth noting the consistent quality and variety. From classic rolls to inventive chef specials, the restaurant maintains a standard that rivals much larger establishments. The combination of fresh ingredients, skilled preparation, and genuine hospitality makes it more than just a place to eat; itβs a place to savor Japanese culinary culture in a comfortable, friendly setting.

This is a good place for sushi. The atmosphere inside is quiet and pleasant. The sushi was made around 10-15 mins after ordering, but I think the reason why the service was fast was because there werenβt that many people at the time. The sushi were great, the sashimi was not too fresh, but it was enjoyable. The staff were polite and generous, we got free desert! The desert was small, but still free. I would recommend this place to another person.
We stopped here tonight after driving into town to visit. We were immediately seated. We ordered the gyoza, crab cheese wonton, angry dragon roll, pad thai with chicken and the shrimp and steak hibachi. First off the appetizers came out immediately after the soup and salad and then they brought the sushi. Then about 3 minutes later our entrees were brought to our table. We weren't able to even finish one appetizer before we had our entrees. Staggering the dishes works wonders so customers dont feel rushed and have plenty of room. The freshness of the sushi and the flavor was off the charts. Some of the best gyoza and the crab cheese wonton was top 5 quality. We've tried alot. The steak and shrimp was good but the rice lacked flavor and was just bland. The yum yum sauce was a bit too sweet but the downer was the pad thai. It didnt have that sweet taste that the usual pad thai has..maybe it was missing palm sugar or tamarind paste. They did give us dessert on the house which seemed to be for each table which was nice.
My boyfriend and I came here for lunch and it was a great choice! The sushi was delicious and the service was excellent! We especially liked their miso soup! They also gave us a free dessert and free wall decor!
Absolutely delicious!! Went there spontaneously while out and weβll be back for sure. The service was fast and the staff were so sweet. Very family friendly as well. Highly recommend!
We had a fantastic meal at Sushi Taro this past week. The Sushi was excellent, tasty and fresh, and the Japanese inspired dishes we also ordered were spot on. The staff was great, properly attentive without being annoying. All in all, we'd recommend this eatery to anyone and we will lost certainly be back.
